Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) Requirements

Required Course Sequence:

UTEP consists of nine primary courses. Each course has been approved by the Rutgers University-Newark course of study committee. The table below shows UTEP’s courses with each course title and accompanying course number.

Cluster I: Educational Foundations Courses

Social Foundations of Urban Education (21:300:292)

3 credits – Fall/Spring

*Gateway course: While in this course students apply to UTEP.

Adolescent Psychology and the Urban Experience (21:300:295)

3 credits – Fall

21st Century Urban Educator:

3 concurrent one-credit courses – Spring

1. Limited English Proficiency (21:300:297)

2. Students with Disabilities and Gifted & Talented (21:300:298)

3. Literacy/Reading (21:300:299)

Only teacher candidates that have been accepted to UTEP are allowed to advance in the program.

Information and Communication Technology for Secondary Schools (21:300:410 / NJIT ESTS410)

Understanding Educational Evaluation (21:300:390 / NJIT ESTS390)

Teacher candidates are screened to ensure they meet the entry requirements for clinical courses.

*Includes Clinical Winter Component (first two weeks in January)

  UTEP Guidelines

* Early Termination of UTEP: Teacher candidates may be terminated from UTEP for exhibiting unprofessional behavior, and/or for violating the Rutgers University Code of Student Conduct on or off-campus. See the link below for complete details (http://catalogs.rutgers.edu/generated/nwk-ug_current/pg584.html) as well as the Teacher Candidate Professional Contract for UTEP.     

 * Students must achieve minimum of a B in all UTEP courses.

* There is a culture course requirement that involves the study of a culture other than the student’s own represented by the urban schoolchildren of New Jersey.

* Plan your course of study early. 

* Clusters I, II, and III courses require observation hours outside of class.

* Before taking Clinical I students must take the PRAXIS II in their content area. Information about the PRAXIS II test is located here: www.ets.org/praxis/nj/requirements.

* Prior to taking Clinical II students must pass the PRAXIS II in their content area.

* Complete all UTEP courses before filling for graduation.
