Earth and Environmental Sciences Holds First-Ever Reunion to Celebrate Historic Achievement

Professor Alexander Gates led 100 people to revel in a moment of glory for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES). At the first-ever EES alumni reunion, which took place on May 31, the group celebrated the department’s historical achievement of ranking 49th in earth sciences by
U.S. News & World Report for its graduate program.

“My goal was always to become nationally ranked, and so after 27 years of being here, this is a big deal for me,” says Gates, professor and undergraduate adviser in the department.

About 100 people attended event, including current faculty and staff, four emeritus faculty, current students and about 60 former students. They learned about the department and renewed old acquaintances. The reunion was the first step in integrating the valuable resource of the experience and expertise of alumni into the educational mission of the department.
